Well as it happens it was my birthday this Sunday! After meeting Little Cousin M (my fellow food blogger) and a sister for yoga - which was bloody energetic I am not going to lie - we meandered down to St Marks Rd to look for an acceptable brunching establishment.
In the light of the fact the fam were also intending to descend on us we opted for the Thali Cafe as its spacious and does a tasty but different brunch.
The highlight of the eatery for me is the decor, atmosphere and the Masala Coffee for a delicious mid morning kick. Im not so much a fan of thalis as I associate the weird plate with prison slops... not that I have been in the clink but you've seen Orange is the new Black right? Luckily for me before 12 there are no slops plates just single plates.
We hadn't booked but, as there is so much space in the establishment, we found a large table easily and the staff were friendly and accommodating to our needs. The food was order at the bar so we were able to browse the menu at our leisure before we made our choices. I was torn between trying the banana and coconut pancakes or the Masala Dhosa which is basically a massive thin pancake with savoury fillings. In the end I went for the banana pancakes and my favourite Masala coffee.
Sweet cousin M went for the Aloo Parantha, a stuffed flatbread and a chai. Further members of the family arrived ordering omelettes and chips and chai and all sorts and everyone was happy although the kids palates weren't used to the slightly unusual flavours of the omelette so stuck to pancakes and chips.
We all ordered at separate times so the food arrived at intervals and we all tucked in. My pancakes were acceptable but dull but cousin M enjoyed her flatbread and worked her way through two chais, clever girl.
The waiting staff were friendly but easily confused. They kept bringing food to our table that was meant for other diners or forgetting what people had ordered and not bringing them anything.
The atmosphere was relaxed, the staff were chilled and nothing was a drama. A good vibe and nice food is all you can ask for when a big troupe rock up to a restaurant on a sunday morning without booking. In my opinion the food isn't show stopping but the environment, atmosphere and friendliness of the staff more than makes up for it!
